Robert Tressell’s THE RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS is available free online in several formats, including Kindle & Audiobook:
Born Robert Noonan in Dublin, Tressall (1870-1911) spent time in South Africa (where he helped form an anti-imperialist Irish Brigade during Boer War), before settling in Hastings, England, to work as a housepainter. His novel, written during an extended illness, has been described by Tony Benn as ‘a major socialist novel that has influenced thousands of its readers.’ The setting is among the houspainters of Mugsborough (a thinly disguised Hastings). Noonan died in poverty in Liverpool three years before his book was published.
A 2008 BBC-produced radio play featuring Bill Bailey, Johnny Vegas, Paul Whitehouse, Andrew Lincoln and John Prescott is available here
