Craig, an English follower of Robert Owen, was de facto manager of a pioneering socialist cooperative experiment at Ralahine, near Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare, 1831-33. Facing many challenges, the co-op successfully raised the living standards of the labouring families who formed it – until the landlord who owned the Ralahine property lost it at a gambling table. Ralahine is discussed in chapter of James Connolly’s LABOUR IN IRISH HISTORY
