Born in Shandon, Cork, Mary Harris Jones (1837-1930) emigrated with her family as a teenager. Employed as teacher & dressmaker in USA, & surviving profound personal tragedies, she joined labour movement in middle age. An organiser for the United Mine Workers & founder of Industrial Workers of the World, she was described as ‘the most dangerous woman in America.’
